Dear Brazil Initiative Community:

Late yesterday we received the following message in Portuguese from the advisors of Federal Deputy Jair Bolsonaro.

Accordingly, his advisors have chosen to cancel the “Conversation with Federal Deputy Jair Bolsonaro” scheduled for October 13th at 5:30 pm at the Elliott School of International Affairs.

We sincerely apologize for the cancellation and are very disappointed that the federal deputy chose to avoid a public and democratic debate that was scheduled well in advance and before his travels to New York. The event drew over 400 RSVPs and most of the major Brazilian media outlets planned to attend this event.

The Brazil Initiative and the Elliott School of International Affairs will continue to invite major Brazilian political leaders to our school to discuss the pressing economic, political and social issues of the day.

We regret that Federal Deputy Bolsonaro has chosen to avoid such debate at this time.

Below is the translated and original notice we received from the federal deputy's advisors.

(translated by the Brazil Initiative)
Federal Deputy Jair Bolsonaro and his team met and decided that to comply with all the deputy’s obligations scheduled for New York they would need to cancel the appearance at The George Washington University. We thank Professor Mark Langevin and all of the academic community for the invitation, and look forward to future opportunities to meet and debate ideas.
The Team of Jair Bolsonaro
